Lustro Ware
What You Probably Didn't Know About Lustro Ware
In the summer of 1938, Gebhard Keny Sr. started his own company, Columbus Plastics Products, with just four employees and a pair of used molding presses.
Initially, the company made plastic components for other companies; but Keny eventually decided to develop, manufacture and market his own line of products. Columbus Plastics revolutionized the plastics molding industry with new, yet cost effective technology, which meant better, but less expensive household products. By 1946 the Columbus brand was producing a line called Lustro Ware. With it's own design staff, and a keen focus on the development of new products, sales of their colorful thermoplastic housewares soared.
When the company was sold 28 years later it employed 800 people and had more than 300 items in its product line!
Keny probably never guessed that Lustro Ware would become one of the most sought after collectibles in the retro market today.
Ever wonder what Lustro Ware sold for in 1952?
