Creating A Retro Kitchen Theme
Considering the amount of time we spend in the kitchen, it just makes sense to give the room a décor that's as much fun as it is functional. A retro kitchen theme is one of the easiest to create, and even if remodeling isn’t in the budget, you can achieve the look without a lot of time and money.
Before you begin your redecorating, take a look around the room. Everything in this room should either a) work or b) make you smile. If it doesn’t do one or the other, get rid of it.....you’re going to want to fill that space with something that adds to the theme.
Now, start with the walls. Paint is still the most affordable way to change a room’s look and feel. Consider using a 1940’s color combination like cream and green or red and white, or maybe you prefer a 50’s pastel yellow. Once you’ve decided on your color scheme, adding vintage kitchen accessories is easy.
Next; window treatments can have a huge impact on the overall look of your décor. Affordable kitchen curtains are available from just about every era. Unfortunately you can’t always find the quantity you need, but there are several alternatives available; stitch them up from a vintage tablecloth, fashion them from vintage dishtowels, or pick up some fabric in a retro pattern and make them.
Then, focus on adding kitchen linens, canisters, and dinnerware in colors and patterns that compliment your decorating style. Vintage tablecloths, dishtowels, potholders, Melmac dishes and chrome or enamel canisters are readily available, and with careful shopping, they can generally be purchased for less than their contemporary counterparts.
Use extra wall space to add a retro kitchen clock, hang a vintage spice rack or display a couple of retro serving trays.
Once the basics are complete, you can have fun stocking the drawers and cupboards with vintage salt and pepper shakers, measuring cups and spoons and cream/green or red/white handled utensils. Finishing the project with these small kitchen gadgets adds a touch of charm and authenticity to any vintage theme.
